What to expect: Opened in 2000 in the 1911 beaux arts Guardian Life building, the W faces Union Square Park and borders the energetic neighborhoods of Gramercy Park, Greenwich Village, and the Flatiron District. Its lofty marble lobby extends into an area appropriately called the Living Room, decorated with soft green velvets and elegant chess and checker sets. Downstairs, the night spot UnderBar attracts both locals and hotel guests to its romantic lounge. - UnderBar This latenight downstairs lounge attracts a mix of fashionable locals and guests of the hotel. The room is decorated with rich velvets in shades of deep brown, red, and gold, and holds gauzy curtained booths for couples.
- The Living Room – The lightfilled lobby bar and seating area has an organic design scheme, with curving, leafy shapes and soft green tones. It has tables with checkers, backgammon, and chess sets, and a menu of cocktails, coffee, and light fare. Brunch is available on Sundays.
