What to expect: Built in 1906 as part of Baruch College, Park South opened as a hotel in 2001. It has a simply furnished lobby, a mezzanine balcony, and well-lit hallways decorated with black-and-white prints from the New York Historical Society. The hotel is within 9 blocks of Madison Avenue, Midtown, the Flatiron District, and the Empire State Building, and primarily attracts business travelers.Amenity highlights: The hotel restaurant, Black Duck, offers a pan-Atlantic seafood menu and serves dinner as well as a complimentary Continental breakfast; in addition to a sidewalk terrace, it has a Victorian-style cocktail lounge. The 24-hour business center provides complimentary high-speed Internet access in addition to faxing and copying services, and the 24-hour fitness room has a stationary bike, treadmill, and cross-country and free-weight machines.
Insider tip: Visitors can walk to Irving Place (9 blocks away), which runs from 14th Street to 20th Street, ending at Gramercy Park (open to residents only). The stretch is a designated historic district lined with brownstones dating from the 1840s and 1850s, as well as a number of bars and restaurants.
