When to go
Although prices don’t fluctuate too wildly, most visitors come to Los Angeles from July through October. To shave a few dollars off your hotel bill, visit in November or December; rates also dip in March and early June, before school vacations.
Must see
- Check out Hollywood & Highland, home to the Chinese Theatre. The Walk of Fame sits at your feet, and the Hollywood sign perches over your shoulder.
- Nobody walks in L.A. … unless they’re shopping! Stroll down Melrose for fashion, cruise Robertson for decor, or scout Rodeo for luxury.
- Life’s a beach: Visit funky Venice (fire-eating unicyclists, anyone?), fritter away an afternoon at Santa Monica’s amusement pier, or stroll the strand in Redondo Beach.
Tips
- Consider a flight into Burbank Airport. It’s actually closer to some sights and downtown L.A. than LAX, and fares are usually lower.
- The Metro Red Line subway shuttles visitors between Hollywood and Universal City in just 5 minutes for $1.25. Stay in one location, and play in another with ease.
- Save money for souvenirs, and get a taste of local life, too: Seek out L.A.’s bounty of ethnic eateries—from Oaxacan moles to Korean barbecue—for cheap eats with flair.
