More about Maui Prince Hotel Makena Resort

What to expect: Ideal for guests seeking a myriad of activities, the resort makes a full vacation possible without ever leaving the grounds. Views include not only the ocean but, directly south, a wilderness state park including a wild beach. The resort's two golf courses immerse guests in a spectacular natural setting of rock walls, wandering gullies, and stream beds.
Amenity highlights: Lovely enough to have earned the cheeky nickname "Marry Me Beach" for its allure as a wedding site, Maluaka Beach in front of the resort is among the best in Maui. A beach-activity center rents out gear for snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, and windsurfing. A 46-foot catamaran based on the beach whisks snorkelers and scuba divers to the fabulously clear waters of Molokini Island. Freshwater swimming is available in two pools (one for children) surrounded by spacious sundecks. Two spas offer convivial soaking pleasure.
Insider tip: Unlike most Maui resorts, the big, open-air, tentlike cabanas around the pools don't require a rental fee but are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Makena Clubhouse This openair restaurant at the golf courses provides a great ocean view and serves lunches and appetizers in late afternoon through the sunset period.

Property amenities

Greeted with a keepsake lei and a chilled face towel, guests find every need and wish catered to at the resort. Bottled water, a gift basket of Hawaiian snack foods, and daily replenishment of ice buckets and coffee for in-room coffeemakers typify the attention-to-comfort style. A path along the ocean welcomes joggers and fitness-walkers at sunrise and strollers in moonlight. Whale-watching during the humpbacks' winter migration is excellent both from the beach and from guestrooms. Complimentary shuttles allow guests to visit shops and other attractions in the luxury resort community of Wailea to the north. Wild beaches lie a five-minute drive to the south. The full-service health spa offers various massage techniques and facial and body treatments. The concierge desk books helicopter sightseeing flights and all other activities available on Maui.

Recreation

Unlike other resort hotels on Maui, the Maui Prince Hotel Makena Resort owns its own golf courses. The North Course winds up Haleakala to as high as 800 feet. The South Course offers arresting ocean views. Guests receive preferential tee-times and discount fees, and are shuttled without charge to the courses. The resort also provides tennis (six courts, two lighted), ping pong, volleyball, shuffleboard, badminton, croquet, and clay shooting. From the beach there's scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, and boogie boarding.

Because the little island of Molokini—celebrated for the water clarity within its crescent—lies so close to the Maui Prince Hotel, getting there for snorkeling and scuba-diving takes only 20 minutes aboard a 46-foot catamaran based at the hotel. During the winter humpback-whale migration, whale watching on the catamaran is prime at this location because most boats stay farther north.

In South Maui, there are many other recreational activities, including:

  • Boating
  • Kayaking
  • Jet skiing
  • Sailing
  • Fishing
  • Hiking/biking trails
  • Horse riding/rental
  • Rafting

Rooms

Guestrooms feature light-colored island-style furniture, including wicker chairs with floral cushions. A table with two chairs, a compact refrigerator, and daily coffee and ice supplies provide convenience. Cable television, a VCR (video lending library at the front desk), and pay movies supply entertainment. Bathrooms offer a lighted makeup mirror. Next to the coffeemaker when guests arrive is a gift basket of Hawaiian snack foods.

Although all rooms are air conditioned, an alternative cooling method is offered: louvered inner doors can be shut for privacy, outer doors and glass doors to lanais can be opened, and rooms can be ventilated by breezes blowing off the western slopes of the Haleakala volcano. All 310 guestrooms are located in a single, seven-floor, A-shaped building pointing toward the ocean, and provide at least a partial view of the ocean from their lanais (patios or balconies).
