More about ResortQuest Waimea Plantation Cottages (formerly Aston)

What to expect: Peace and quiet prevails at this spacious former plantation that avoids artificial, postcard-perfect grooming. Extra-tall coconut trees could be a century old. Pretty gardens surround the pastel-colored, wood cottages. A hen might usher her brood across the grand lawn-and-palm grove. The long, undeveloped beach was made for walking beside the blue Pacific. And snoozing on a cottage porch or in a lounge chair is inevitable.
Amenity highlights: On the oceanfront is a good-size pool surrounded by a large sunning deck that includes a hot tub. Nearby are two beach volleyball courts and two shuffleboard courts. A day spa occupies one of the cottages. These emblems of 21st-century pleasure unobtrusively blend with history. A little museum about the Waimea Sugar Mill Company, whose worker cottages guests occupy, is worth a visit.
Insider tip: Shaded by wonderful old trees, two picnic tables near the beach provide a cool spot for an afternoon lunch.

Dinining

  • Waimea Brewing Co. A brewpub adjacent to the main building and architecturally identical, this casual spot with a highceilinged interior also offers openair seating on a large porch. Pub food prevails for lunch, but the menu expands in the evening to include more substantial fare, such as steak.

Property amenities

Located in the sparsely populated, non-resort Waimea area, the plantation is ideally situated for exploring both West and South Kauai. The entrance to Waimea Canyon, the 3,000-foot-deep "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," is a few minutes' drive away. Polihale State Park, which encompasses Hawaii's longest beach, lies about one hour to the northwest. The famed Poipu Beach resort area is 30 minutes east. And the Waimea area itself includes many historic sites.
Wireless high-speed Internet access is available in the lobby (surcharge; hotel does not provide cards). Parking is complimentary.
