What to expect: Guests of this 30-year-old Hyatt are greeted by Eclipse, a gargantuan, spherical metal sculpture resting on a reflective pool in the center of the soaring atrium lobby. Architect John Portman’s angular design, built according to feng shui principles, also includes hallways that face the atrium and act as indoor balconies for the guestrooms, and cylindrical glass elevators that look like something out of Willy Wonka. At this bustling hotel, the mostly convention/corporate clientele during the week gives way to a leisurely crowd on weekends.Amenity highlights: Perhaps the city’s premier prom-night restaurant, Equinox offers a spectacular setting for a celebratory dinner, drink, or champagne brunch. Located on the hotel’s 20th-floor rooftop, the restaurant slowly rotates, making a complete revolution in 45 minutes and taking guests on a 360-degree tour of the Bay and the city skyline (note: diners have been known to get lost returning from the restroom). There’s also a complimentary fitness center.
Insider tip: Situated along the revitalized Embarcadero waterfront, the hotel is across the street from the recently opened Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market, where on Saturdays, producers display a dizzying array of organic produce, artisan cheeses, coffee, flowers, chocolate, jams, and prepared foods. - Equinox Northern California’s only revolving rooftop restaurant is a popular destination for specialoccasion dinners. The menu emphasizes Pacific Rim fare, but includes regional specialties such as Dungeness crab cakes, as well as steak and lobster. On Sundays, Equinox serves a champagne brunch, featuring a large buffet and jazz; brunch fee includes vouchers for a bay cruise.
